THE MARIA CALLAS ASSOCIATION
AT THE AUCTION IN PARIS:
Precious personal effects have been rescued
For the Venice Museum and future exhibitions.
As has been reported in the Press and on our Association
website, the president Bruno Tosi was there in person
at the auction held at Maison Drouot Mantaigne in Paris
on 2nd December 2999 (the very same day that Maria was
born in 1923) establishing a "chain" with several collectors
and with the representatives of the Fortenbacher Agency
which will present, at the Callas Exhibition in Hamburg
(15th May 2000) a number of her personal effects and related
items which would otherwise have been lost for ever.
Some of those present making purchases at the Paris auction
were approached and made aware of the situation, and asked
whether they might be willing to entrust certain items
on loan for the forthcoming programmed exhibitions around
the world in the coming years, starting with the German
Tour, which will, as stated, open in Hamburg where Callas
gave an unforgettable concert in 1959 which, to our great
future, is recorded on film video.
We should also wish to request through our website that
anyone who has acquired any of Callas's personal effects
(via internet) get
in touch with us at he email address so as to consider a possible co-operation
in the future.
This also applies to anyone who might have newspapers,
concert programmes, letters, ephemera or any other item
or personal effect owned by or relating to Callas, and
we would be grateful to have been putting together a remarkable
archive of such items.
The Associazione Callas will be publishing a series of
volumes with all the comments and the articles on the
Callas Exhibitions. This will prove invaluable both to
scholars and admirers of "La Divina". It is breathtaking
to read today the extent to which she is appreciated both
for her voice and her interpretive talent from her very
first performances.
