GIULIETTA SIMIONATO, MARIA CALLAS’ FAITHFUL FRIEND HAS DIED
BRUNO TOSI RECALLS GIULIETTA SIMIONATO’S LAST TRIP IN VENICE
yesterday, May 5th 2010, in the early morning, the heart of Giulietta Simionato, one of the best voices of the 20th century and of all time, as well as an extraordinary artistic phenomenon, has suddenly stopped in the Clinic of the Cross of Malta in Grillo Square in Rome. She was born on May 12th 1910 and in seven days she would be 100 years old. The sad news has arrived also in Venice and the first one to be informed was Bruno Tosi, one of the Prima donna’s best friends.
“We were organizing, even in a completely private way, a birthday party on May 12th- Bruno Tosi declares. We couldn’t imagine her passing away, since during the last days she was quite fine, even if weary from a long time.
Bruno Tosi, in 1992, founded Maria Callas Association and Giulietta Simionato accepted at once the honorary Presidency, taking part to the most important exhibitions all over the world, organized by the venetian cultural operator.
The unforgettable artist’s last trip was just in Venice in 2005, for the entitling of Callas street behind the watercourse of the Fenice Opera House. The Fenice: a bridge and a “fondamenta” (bank) dedicated to the Divina. Giulietta was patroness of the event, after the present, a portrait of Callas by Ulisse Sartini, to the Fenice Opera House. Tosi had fulfilled the wish of the owner, Ferruccio Mezzadri, who was Callas’ butler for years. Now the picture is, and will be forever, in the first tier of the boxes of the theatre. In the same year 2005, Giulietta Simionato was back in Venice, invited as usual by Bruno Tosi, to celebrate Pier Luigi Pizzi on occasion of the prize giving “One life in Music” on September 4th.
Cheered by the audience and invited on the stage of the theatre, she spoke a lot, mentioning her venetian memories.
The funeral service has been held today, May 6th, at 11.00 a.m. in the chapel of the Cross of Malta in Grillo Square in Rome. Also Carla Fracci and Bruno Tosi have wanted to pay tribute to the Great Prima donna.
