POSTE ITALIANE presents THE STAMP
DEDICATED TO A MARIA CALLAS
On October 18th 2007 at Spazio Filatelia (Philatelic Site) in Venice it was issued the stamp commemorating the thirtieth anniversary of Maria Callas’s death, occurred on September 16th 1977 in Paris.
The stamp, belonging to the series “Famous Stars”, reproduces Maria Callas’s portrait, a stuff with some notes, and in the background details of the soprano’s face and headdress while performing the opera “Turandot”.
The President of Callas Association, Mr.Bruno Tosi, for years and years attentive to the artist’s life and works, and her great admirer, retraced the stages of her artistic success and also the less happy ones regarding her private life, reminding how Venice had been a place of great importance in the singer’s life.
“We wanted to exhibit here some of the artist’s costumes and private objects, among which a love letter written to the greek shipowner Aristotele Onassis”, Bruno Tosi declared.
“Italian Post Office”, B.E. Biagio Ximenes, Northeast Post Office director mentioned, paid tribute to Callas with an important exhibition staged at the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, seat of the General Post Office, from September 3rd to 22nd, with costumes and personal objects on display. On September 16th, anniversary of the death, on occasion of the concert, at the Fenice Opera House, celebrating sixty years from her debut, Italian Post Office issued a special cancellation to seal this important date. From today onwards is on sale in Italy at the counters of Italian Post Office.

tre francobolli, uniti tra di loro lungo il lato di mm 40, sono impressi
in un riquadro perforato posto nella parte superiore del foglietto. Fuori
dal riquadro è raffigurato un profilo di Maria Callas ed alcuni
particolari tratti dalle vignette dei francobolli.
Completano il foglietto, in alto a sinistra il logo di Poste Italiane e
in basso la scritta “PERSONAGGI CELEBRI DELLO SPETTACOLO”
